Match Report

Newlands won the toss and chose to field to a weakened Goodwill side.  The openers looked fairly well set when Mike Allaway checked his usual follow-through and dollied up a simple catch.  Colin Correa fell to an edge behind soon after.  A promising partnership between Andy Callanan and Chris Westwood was broken in controversial style when the latter was bowled by a donkey drop from behind the umpire which generated a discussion between the umpires as to whether it was a no ball - consensus was not.  Wickets continued to fall steadily, with a break for a rain shower, before Gareth Hughes and Darren Westwood  put together an attacking 41 for the eighth wicket.  Two quick strikes by the  home team brought the Goodwill Captain to the wicket to assist in another useful 20 run partnership.  153 was considered a touch short for such a good batting track.

The Newlands reply got off to a terrible start as Colin Correa got the opening batsman caught with the score  still on zero.  An excellent and sustained attack by the Goodwill opening bowlers (Correa and Captain Steve Graves), ably assisted by some tight fielding (particularly the great catch by Darren Westwood) saw another five wickets fall quickly, leaving the hosts reeling at 46 for 6.  At this point, however, the lack of depth of the Goodwill attack became apparent and Newlands fought their way back into the game, with the aid of some controversial stumping denials.  Eventually Newlands got the total with six overs and three wickets remaining.
